Bacalhoeiros

A pop-up store set on the ground floor of an 18th-century building with a layered past. Formerly a customs house, later the headquarters of Banco Nacional Ultramarino, and eventually a ticket office and warehouse for the bus station. The central challenge was to create a contemporary retail space while preserving and elevating the building’s historical strata.

Vaulted ceilings, stone arches and structural columns from the original customs house coexist with marble-clad walls and finely crafted noble woods from the BNU period. Original solid wood counters were extended using tree trunks found in the former storage areas, while a velvet fabric wall was introduced to balance the scale and harmonise materials, alongside a rainbow artwork by Ana Romero. Industrial furniture from the former Setnave shipyards completes the space, which later evolved to host Loja de Cá and Bar Koa, extending its narrative of continuous transformation.
